Losing Your Marbles

Keeping track of your progress can sometimes feel like a long, uphill battle. As rejections pile up, the road ahead may seem even longer. Here’s a simple motivational tip to help you stay focused on your goal.

While this example is tailored for sending queries to agents, you can use this trick for any goal you’re striving to achieve.

Step One

Find an empty jar — fancy, plain, sentimental or repurposed. You’ll be looking at it for a while, so pick one that resonates with you.

Step Two

Find or purchase some marbles, gems, beads… anything small and shiny that brings you joy. You’ll need one for each query you send. So if you plan to send 100 queries , gather 100 of these little treasures.

Step Three

Place the jar near your desk, or wherever you write. Every time you send a query, drop one of your treasures into the jar. This becomes your tangible symbol of your progress!

Remember that getting published is more than just talent and timing. It also takes tenacity. This jar of gems embodies your perseverance and commitment to your journey.

If you give this a try, we’d love to see a picture of your jar as it fills up (querysurvival at gmail dot com). After all, it’s a great way to show you’re keeping all your marbles!
